Advancing Gout Therapeutics: New ACR Abstract Features Dr. Kymberly Moyer and Dr. Michael Lovelace as Contributing Authors
Managing treatment-resistant gout remains a significant clinical challenge, driving the need for next-generation therapeutic strategies. Recent breakthroughs highlight the immense potential of combining novel agents with established standards of care to assist patients who have historically fallen short of their uric-acid targets. As rheumatology pipelines increasingly rely on these sophisticated, multi-modality approaches, the successful and rigorous execution of early-phase clinical trials at the site level is more critical than ever to ensure these innovations can confidently transition into late-stage development.
Among the key contributors and investigators to this recent clinical milestone are:
• Dr. Kymberly Moyer at Magnolia Family Medicine in Hendersonville, TN
• Dr. Michael Lovelace at Derby City Direct Primary Care in Louisville, KY
Serving as principal investigators for this clinical program, both Dr. Moyer and Dr. Lovelace played a critical role in supporting the execution of a randomized, open-label, multiple-dose Phase II study evaluating Darbinurad (D-0120) combined with allopurinol. Their participation underscores how essential seasoned principal investigators and integrated site networks are to executing intricate protocols, ensuring high enrollment compliance, clean source data capture, and impactful contributions to clinical advancement in metabolic and rheumatic diseases.
The research will be presented at the ACR Convergence 2026 meeting, and evaluated the efficacy and safety of Darbinurad, a novel inhibitor of uric acid transporter 1 (URAT1), plus allopurinol in gout patients with an inadequate response to standard allopurinol monotherapy. The study targeted patients aged 18 to 75 who had experienced two or more gout flares during the previous year and continued to exhibit elevated serum uric acid (sUA) levels despite prior treatments.
The abstract details, “Darbinurad plus allopurinol is well-tolerated and effective in gout patients with an inadequate response to allopurinol. Notably, 82.5% of patients in the Darbinurad 5 mg plus allopurinol group achieved the target sUA level at week 12, highlighting meaningful clinical benefit in this difficult-to-treat population and representing a promising novel therapeutic option for additional urate-lowering beyond standard therapy. These results support a confirmatory phase III study to further evaluate the long-term efficacy and safety of this combination.”
Efforts supported by the DelRicht team demonstrate how operational innovation remains central to the future of drug development, showcasing that advanced urate-lowering combination therapies can be safely monitored and executed within high-volume clinical settings. Tyler Hastings, Managing Partner at DelRicht Research added:
“Rheumatology studies of this caliber are critical to ensuring we deliver both speed and predictability to our trial sponsors while helping gout patients gain access to advanced therapies that reflect the current landscape of medicine. By successfully executing this Phase 2 study in our embedded clinics, our network, led by exceptional investigators like Dr. Moyer and Dr. Lovelace, prove that we can maintain strict protocol fidelity to deliver clean, submission-ready data that ultimately drives Phase 3 development.” – Tyler Hastings, Managing Partner at DelRicht Research
DelRicht Research is proud to be part of this broader scientific community, one that is committed to moving medicine forward through innovation, operational excellence, and patient-centered clinical trial execution. Contributions from dedicated network investigators like Dr. Moyer and Dr. Lovelace ensures that complex study designs translate smoothly into rapid study execution, and real-world therapeutic impact. For sponsors looking to pioneer the next generation of gout therapies, this trial serves as a blueprint for successful site-sponsor collaboration.
